Two days in September
There are cities that celebrate their holyday in the middle of summer; others do it in winter because they need ice and snow for their festivals. Moscow have chosen early autumn, which is when most Moscovites return from their vacations, when school bells are ringing and new students enter their lecture rooms. Also, the weather still tastes of summer.
For the first time Moscow celebrated its birthday in the year of 1947 - that year the capital turned 800, a respectable age. Ever since 1986 such celebrations have been a tradition. Judging by the sheer scale of the event and the enthusiasm of the Moscovites, this tradition will live forever. As in previous years, there will be plenty of festival events - even on a flying carpet one could not visit all 500 of them.
Athletes will set the pace for this holiday because for city government as much as for regional sports authorities City day is traditionally the mayor event of the year. So they planned many competitions, tournaments and contests for the beginning of September, which marks the end of sports year. For children it is a school bell which beckons them to stadiums, sport classes and sports grounds.
However, you won’t need a flying carpet these days thanks to the “Moscow Yard is a Sports Ground” program with the motto “Come to the yard, let’s play!”. Among possible exceptions are Luzhniki - a stadium where lots of athletic events take place, and the traditional Moscow regatta in which the best masters of Europe and USA will show their skills. You will see it if you come to Krymskii Bridge one of these days.
